THE SHORT ANSWER

Microsoft recommends at least 20 Mbps for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC (10 Mbps on phones), a wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and a supported browser: Edge, Chrome or Safari. Low, steady latency matters as much as raw speed. (Source: Xbox Wire, December 2025.)

What each check means

  • Browser: Xbox Cloud Gaming supports Edge, Chrome and Safari. Firefox isn't officially supported.
  • Video decoding: asks your browser whether it can play 1080p or 1440p video at 60 frames per second smoothly. That depends on your graphics hardware and drivers.
  • Display: the stream can't look sharper than your screen. A 1080p or higher display shows the full picture.
  • Mouse capture and full screen: needed for keyboard and mouse play, both natively and with extensions.
  • Download, latency and jitter: speed decides picture quality. Latency and jitter decide how responsive and smooth it feels.

What this test can't measure

The network test talks to our server on Cloudflare's network. The page shows which Cloudflare location you reached. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft's own data centres, and some internet providers route the two differently, so in-game latency can be higher or lower. The download speed and jitter results are the most useful guide. For the true numbers, turn on the network stats overlay inside a cloud game. A single download test is a snapshot. Run it again at the times you usually play.

How to improve a weak result

  • Use an Ethernet cable, or connect to your router's 5 GHz Wi-Fi band and sit closer to it.
  • Pause downloads, streaming and cloud backups on your network while you play.
  • Close heavy browser tabs, and turn on hardware acceleration in your browser settings.
  • If the picture stutters but the network is fine, try Edge or Chrome, and update your graphics drivers.

Is 20 Mbps enough for 1440p?

Microsoft's general recommendation is 20 Mbps. Higher resolutions use more data, so more headroom helps. Aim for comfortably above 20 Mbps with steady latency.

Why is my speed lower than my internet plan?

Wi-Fi, other devices on your network, and busy evening hours all reduce real-world speed. Run the test on the same connection and at the same time of day you play.
